    Come join us at an Open House Hands-on German Research Workshop on Saturday September 19, 2015 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Members of the Germanic Genealogy Special Interest Group will be at the St. Louis Public Library Central Branch (1301 Olive Street St. Louis, MO 63103) in the Genealogy Room helping those participants with their German genealogical research and brick walls.

    We will have a few members who will be able to translate short German documents.

    What to bring:

    • Change for parking meters or credit card
    • German genealogical problems
    • SHORT German documents

    Have you ever wondered what types of traditions your ancestors had? Join us to learn more about the German Holiday Traditions of the past and present. There will be a panel of GGSIG Steering Committee members who will be discussing a few of the traditions that your ancestors might have celebrated.

    Topics covered will be
    * Decorations
    * Christmas Markets
    * Food
    * Beverages
    * Music

    We would also like to have a few participants share their family traditions. So if you have some fun Christmas traditions please share.

    We will be holding the panel at the Lutheran Hour Ministries [660 Mason Ridge Center, St. Louis, MO 63141]. Doors will open at 1:00 so you can talk among friends and explore the exhibits presented. Presentation will be at 1:30 - 2:30. After the presentation, gather back in the All-Purpose room for more conversation and refreshments.

    WILLKOMMEN

    The Germanic Genealogy Group, formerly Germanic Genealogy Special Interest Group, and the St. Louis Public Library invites you to an all-day Genealogy Seminar: German Genealogy Research: Beyond the Basics. The seminar will be held on Saturday,March 5, 2016, in the Auditorium at the St. Louis Public Library Central Branch, in downtown St. Louis. Our guest speaker will be the noted speaker and author, Dr. Roger Minert.

    The day will start with the opening of registration at 8:30 am and the first program starting at 9:00 am. There will be four programs offered during the day:

    • Cemeteries in Central Europe
    • Deciphering Handwriting in German Documents
    • Communicating with Agencies and Individuals in Europe
    • Census Records in Germany 

    It will be a fun day of learning about German genealogy.

    For those of you who have heard Dr. Minert speak, we are sure you will be the first to register for this special genealogy day. For those who have not heard him speak, we suggest you visit his website: http://www.rogerpminert.com.  He will be selling his books.  Personal checks accepted.

    To learn more about other St. Louis German cultural organizations, representatives will be on hand to provide information about their organization.

    Ortsippenbücher contain genealogical information about families within a specific town, village, or parish. Information can cover many generations of a family going back to the beginning of written records. Discover the areas of Germany where these books are available and learn how to use this resource yourself through a case study that will take a St. Louis Family back through the beginning of the records.

    Baerbel will share how to use digital libraries to solve German research problems and enrich your family history, including how to find town pictures, address books, newspapers, histories, maps, biographies, historical calendars, and more. Occasionally, images of church- and civil records have also been published in a digital library.

    Presentation will start at 7:00pm.

    Join us for a presentation from the Missouri Department of Parks discussing the rare German Landmark found in Gerald, Missouri: Pelster Housebarn.

    The uniqueness and historic significance of the Pelster House Barn will be shared featuring photographs documenting its history and  construction methods.  Nineteenth century German immigrants contributed much to the development to the state of Missouri and this program will share one such example, a combined barn and house, beautifully crafted and a rare treasure.

    Join us Dennis Northcott, Missouri History Museum Archivist, discuss an underutilized resource, company employee magazines and trade magazines, that can be very valuable to give details about your ancestor.   These magazines are packed with interesting facts about our ancestors, including articles on employees' hobbies and military service; birth, death, and marriage announcements; photographs of employees' children; announcements of promotions and retirements; and much more. This presentation will show many examples of content from these magazines and tips for locating them.
